. In it the 30 year old Pauling explained the tetrahedral coordination of
carbon and the square or octahedral coordination of transition-metal ions on wave
mechanical principles. He introduced the concept of hybridization and his rules provided
information regarding the relative strength of bonds formed by different atoms, the angles
between bonds, free rotation or lack of free rotation about bond axes and a complete
theory of the magnetic moments of molecules and complex ions.
This paper was published on 6 April 1931. On 7 April, Pauling sent
off a one page summary of that paper entitled `Quantum Mechanics and the Chemical Bond' to
Physical Review, who published it on 1 May. Such was the confidence, clarity and
